MY KNUCKLES RAPPED below the brass name plaque on the door. "Captain Taylor?"

"Come in, we were expecting you." We?

As I opened the door, hatred boiled inside me, and if not for Captain Taylor sitting at his desk as a potential witness, I would have made what I had done before look like a child’s birthday party. "I won't stay, here is the file and all of my notes. I will no longer be working on the Sophia case. Trust you will respect my decision." The brown file thudded onto his desk, papers stuck out, but I fought the perfectionist in me and left it in slight disarray.

"Finley, we need you on this case," Tom said to my back.

"Captain Taylor, as long as Tom's involved in this case, I won't be. I will explain the circumstances to Professor Scott, and I have enough information to complete my thesis."

"This is not my call to make, but I agree, we need you on this case. Please excuse me while I go talk to my superior officer. Perhaps there is a way around all of this." He left me to face the man whose throat I wanted to rip open with my bare hands.

"I brought him in for questioning, that's all."

My mind replayed what Aidan had said at our home. My stomach turned on itself.

"Finley, I was only doing my job. It's no secret Aidan hates Ari's guts. We have witnesses to corroborate this."

Still I said nothing, only grinding my teeth.

"When are you going to realise the man you married is a cold-blooded killer, and he deserves to be in prison?"

Don't do it, Finley.

"Aidan tried to kill Ari. Are you so blinded by lust that you ignore the itching in your palms every time he touches you?"

The only thing my palms felt as I stood there were nails digging into them.

"Your entire life I have loved you as a daughter; you used to trust my judgement. What has gotten into you? Was it the events during the war? Or do you miss your parents so much that you will cling to this monster just to experience what you perceive to be love?"

My hand clenched around the 599 XT FOX Karambit in my pocket. Captain Taylor walked in and I released my grip, settling both my hands behind my back.

He took his seat and stared at both of us. "My superiors gave me clear instructions to remove Tom from this case, with immediate effect. Finley, if you're willing to see this through, we will forever be in your debt, considering the circumstances. You have a bright future ahead of you and what you bring to the table is invaluable."

Footsteps echoed through the building. Tom left without saying a word.

"Thank you, Captain."

"You don't need to see Ari either, all information will be relayed through me or the detectives."

"Do you know if Ari has seen Doctor James? I need to find out if he has anything to add to the investigation after his appointment?"

"I will email the report to you.
